Details: Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist A Magnet Organization is looking for a compelling Clinical Nurse Specialist / CNS to lead the Oncology Department and continue to deliver effective quality care with levels of expertise for this close-knit community. Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist Job Description The Clinical Nurse Specialist / CNS for Oncology has 3 roles: (1) clinical expert piece, working side by side with the RN’s to raise the standard of care; (2) leadership, developing new policies and procedures through research and being able to influence the department through her leadership role; (3) patient advocate. This Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist / CNS will need to make sure the policies and procedures are kept in order. The Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist / CNS spends about 80% of his/her time on the unit itself, and 20% dedication to clinical education house-wide, connecting with the other departments and doing needs assessments. The Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist / CNS is a member of the Education Department, where each nursing department has a Clinical Nurse Specialist / CNS. The Education Department is an integral part of this magnet facility. They have a successful RN residency program. They have a RN to BSN program in place already, where the hospital helps pay for their tuition in order to support staff back in school and the professional development. Reviews and testing for the RN’s certification programs are also supported by the hospital. The Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist is also responsible for coordinating this with the RN’s. The big focus of this hospital is the integration, development and growth of their Oncology Service Line. The hospital has a well-known on-site outpatient comprehensive cancer center. The 25-bed Acute Oncology/Palliative Care Unit will move to a brand new tower in the Fall. They are partnering with a major teaching hospital with regard to their Oncology program. An experienced oncology nurse, who is a new Clinical Nurse Specialist / CNS graduate will be trained by the many Clinical Nurse Specialists in the department that can provide mentorship. The Director of Education and the CNO are both Clinical Nurse Specialists, where they can set up orientation to ensure a defined CNS role. The Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist / CNS has to be someone that goes with the flow and play well with because there a lot of private practice doctors. The need is for someone who can build quality policies and procedures, stand by it, and present it with authority. This hospital is a very desirable place to work and the culture is unique. This is a perfect blend of high touch and high tech for staff. This small town environment in a big city is perfect for management. Even with 400 beds, this hospital is very family-oriented. There is a high managed care population, which has made this hospital financially stable for many years. They are one of the free-standing, non-profit, non-union hospitals in California. The Departments work well together, every unit is staffed with RN’s, and there are no vacancies in Med/surg. The retention rate is 97% for Med/surg, and 93% for overall nursing. This hospital has a burn unit, pediatrics, Level III NICU, a busy ER with 64,000 visits per year and their own skilled nursing facility. The maternity ward is busy with over 300 births per month that include many multiple births.
